The Adventure Continues

Day 3 took us from Gladstone toward Lake Superior and one of the roads we’d been most excited about riding in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, H-58 through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

We started with a stop in Marquette, where we checked out the waterfront, spotted some enormous ships, and got our first good look at Lake Superior. Of course, looking wasn’t enough. We had to get down to the beach and actually put our hands in the water. Surprisingly, it wasn’t nearly as cold as we’d expected!

We also finally tried our first U.P. pasty. We’d heard plenty about them before the trip, so naturally we had to see what all the fuss was about. Our first impressions were pretty good, although we could definitely understand why some people like theirs with gravy.

From there, the day became less about covering miles and more about trying to find a way to stop stopping. Miners Beach, the overlooks along Lake Superior, and the Log Slide all gave us reasons to get off the bikes and take in the scenery. Chris even tackled the stairs at Miners Beach without bothering to take her helmet off, although the climb back up was another story!

And then there was H-58. We’d been looking forward to the curves, but the scenery and stops ended up being just as memorable as the riding. Every time we thought we’d make some progress, there was something else worth seeing.

By the time we reached Grand Marais, we’d spent a good part of the day exploring and still had a long ride ahead of us toward Mackinaw City.

This is the first half of Day 3. The rest of our ride, including the Mackinac Bridge, continues in Part 2.

Noteworthy Roads:
• H58 — Runs between Munising and Grand Marais through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There are miles of sweeping curves, rolling hills, and beautiful forest scenery. It’s one of the U.P.’s best-known motorcycle roads, with easy access to Lake Superior, scenic overlooks, beaches, and the famous Log Slide. The riding is fantastic, but the places we stopped along the way made it an adventure all its own.
